Fighters of the National Guard of Ukraine periodically conduct military exercises in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. It is reported by Deutsche Welle.
During a tour of Pripyat, tourists from Germany and Canada found numerous bullet tracks on the abandoned cafe building. The guide explained to foreigners that bullet holes on historic buildings in the center of the evacuated city were not left by stalkers, but by Ukrainian National Guard officers during firing.
The country’s authorities do not advertise the conduct of exercises in the exclusion zone. So, on the website of the National Guard and the Ministry of Internal Affairs about the firing is not reported. Warnings about the closure of the zone sometimes appear on the page of the state-owned enterprise Center for Organizational, Technical and Information Support for the Management of the Exclusion Zone, which is responsible for allowing tourists to Chernobyl. However, Pripyat is often closed without warning. “Tourists were not allowed to the location, for the visit of which they paid money. And some just flew to Ukraine just for the sake of it, ”Yaroslav Emelianenko, director of the Chernobyl Tour company, recalls one of such cases.
The press service of the National Guard confirmed that military training periodically takes place in the exclusion zone. The department explained the firing in Chernobyl by the fact that in Ukraine there are no training facilities specially prepared for this. For example, in Pripyat, the Ukrainian military can practice combat operations in the city, as well as apply these skills during the fighting in the Donbass, the National Guard noted. The ministry also assured that the fighters are observing the necessary safety rules, and their equipment and equipment after firing are checked for radioactive contamination.
Critics of such events in the exclusion zone believe that the military should not be at risk during training. “Of course, we can say that exercises should be held in conditions as close as possible to combat. But at the same time, the military should not die during such exercises. Moreover, this is still a zone of radioactive destruction, ”said Taras Chmut, editor of the Ukrainian Military Portal website.
Besides, numerous illegal tourists, who are many in the exclusion zone, are also in danger.
